Ghana international Jeffrey Schlupp was among the goals as Crystal Palace pulled a shock win over Manchester City on Saturday, their first on the road in the 2018/19 season.
Schlupp’s equaliser on 33 minutes not only silenced the home crowd but started to give Palace confidence that if they took advantage of any chances that came their way they could be heading back south with maximum points.
Added to that goal was a spectacular effort by Andros Townsend and a well taken spot kick by Luka Milivojevic as Roy Hodgson’s side picked up a win on the road at the home of the champions.
“It was a special performance, to come to a club like Manchester City is never easy and I feel we fully deserved the three points, said Schlupp as he spoke after the match and revealed that the side were intent on going into the game with a firm belief in their mind.
“All week we have been talking about having no fear and come into this one off the back of a good result last week and we wanted to take plenty of the positives from last week into this one and as I say the main thing was not to have any fear. You have seen some teams come here and almost play to lose and we never do that because we go into every game trying to win and we managed to do that today.”
Just two minutes after Schlupp’s goal it was to be a spectacular effort from 30 yards out by Townsend that was to put Palace into the lead and already at the turn of the year is an early favourite for the top flight goal scoring honours for this campaign.
“It was a wonderful goal and a special moment, I was shouting for him to shoot because if they get it on the edge of their box they can break well because they are so good on the counter attack but he had no doubt in his head and got it on target and scored a wonderful goal.”
The three points on the road meant that Palace recorded back to back wins for the first time this season and Schlupp believes that the side need to keep building on the good work of recent weeks to keep moving up the Premier League table.
“It means a lot confidence wise, we have not been playing that badly but have maybe not had the luck in previous games and it is always nice to get a few goals as well as we have not managed to score as many goals as we would have liked but when we have players going forward and playing with confidence you can see what we can do, we took positives from recent performances into this one and we are all delighted to get three points.”
